Bon jour a tous!

I report back from sunny Southampton (though not so sunny today I guess). I've conquered the Czech Republic since the last time I spoke to you, as well as spending my time between the French and Swiss Alps (Divonne in France and Geneva in Switzerland). I love Switzerland, but I just don't think Switzerland loves me! This is the second time we've been there, and it's also the second time someone from my family has ended up in a hospital there. Nothing serious, thank God, but still! When you're in gorgeous Switzerland you don't want to be staring at the four walls of a hospital waiting room. We made the best of it, though, and we saw, photographed, ate and shopped our little hearts out.

I remember saying this about Munich last year, but I have to say it again about Geneva: it's full of Arabs! One thing that shocked me though was the people's attitudes here towards us. A lot of people were very hospitable and very friendly (being able to speak with them in their language was a huge help, though), but there were some people whose behaviour was apalling. I was on the tram once and struck up a conversation with this Swiss/French/English woman, and she was laughing about how my brother scared her with his cap with skulls all over it, and then we started talking about Arabs and how there are so many here during the summer. And then she had the audacity to go on and say things like it's so interesting how most Arab men grow beards and bla bla, and we said it's part of our culture, and she just kept on saying how interesting it was, until she said, yes it's very good because it shows that they're hiding their faces, the Arabs are always hiding their faces, even the women, because they don't want the other people to know what they're thinking or something like that. Bitch, who asked you? If she stopped at that it would have been ok, but she kept on going on and on about how much we had to hide stuff, and how we make money so quickly or whatever.

I just find it incredibly rude and insulting that within the first five minutes of meeting someone you get schooled by them about everything that's wrong with your 'people'. And the making money comments were a dead giveaway. It's like, Arabs are coming in here and spend crazy money which all goes to boost their tourism and general economy. And then they turn around and say shit like that? It completely shattered the impression that I had about how hospitable and friendly Swiss people are. I would NEVER speak like that to anyone of any nationality within the first meeting. How RUDE.

Pictures have been taken and will be posted up soon, once I can get around to it.
And in other news, which I completely forgot to mention, I am finally finally finally a licensed driver!!!

Remember not to judge a whole group or community based on one Person's opinion or comment, because now they have made you just as low!

So just take that once and think ignorance and move on!

so true - i would never judge, cos i wouldn't want someone to form their opinion on oman after meeting oman's rudest person for example!
so let my experience be a lesson to all :p

I'm gonna tell you something that happened at uni ..

I don't even know why they are doing this :S
I guess they are too racists

Things that have Happened

Here is what has been going on that excuses my inexcusable laziness.

  • I have discovered the beach. I live two streets across the most amazing shore in all of Oman! Actually that's a lie. In fact, the most beautiful two beaches are a) Sifa beach b) Qantab beach. The one near my house is a close third. I went there one day because I remembered how much fun I used to have by the beach and have been going there every day for an hour ever since. My feet are nice and smooth without even bothering with a manicure, my mood's a billion times better and even my skin looks better (I know what you're thinking, how could I possibly be more fabulous than I already am? It's true, though, it's true).

  • I have travelled. I am back in Southampton for a 'holiday'. Not much relaxation going on here (refer to excuse number 3).

  • I have a new apartment. Murphy's law at it's finest hour. Everything that could go wrong absolutely did, and then some. But you guys weren't here for the ugly part, now the plumbing is safe, the tv has been installed (most important thing), and the furniture is on it's way. Now there's nothing left to do but to sit back and wait (refer to excuse number 4).

  • I am travelling again. Prague, beautiful Prague! I have heard unbelievable things about this city. It just sucks that I was such a lazy bum and didn't even bother to pick up a phrasebook. Oh well, that's waht the internet is for! How do you say lazy ass in Czech???? I'm leaving in 3 days and need to know how to refer to myself when they get offended by my touristy narrowmindedness of only speaking English.

These are my excooses, and that is all I can say. I shall be back after the 21st with pictures (I hope) of the golden city, la belle boheme!

What to do, What to say

My lousy, stinky, ugly laptop has finally kicked the bucket. It was about 215 in laptop years anyways (just over two years old, actually). I've been relying on Little Brother's laptop these days so forgive the absence.
I like coming back home and witnessing all the changes that are happening. It's fun, it's frustrating, it makes me want to hang myself. THEY (the all-powerful, malicious, THEY) have decided to build a supermarket - that's right, SUPERMARKET - across the street from my house! Not directly across the street, but two doors down from across the street. STILL! By all the CAPITAL LETTERS you can tell I'm not too happy about it. It's going to create chaos and it's going to bring the little neighborhood shop out of business! I'm officially boycotting it. No way, man! Support the locals!!

Another thing, the Arab world has officially been declared insane. Apparently, divorce rates have gone up this year because of... a TV show. There are these new shows that are aired on MBC and MBC4 which are actually Turkish but translated into Arabic which have become all the rage nowadays. My mom's obsessed with it, my sister loves it. It's the new trend, after ugly-double-super-sized-sheila-heads. It seems that the Gulf-wide infatuation has somehow broken up marriages. I don't know how, but I don't doubt that the reasons are as inane and insane as the former trends.

In the meantime, I don't want to jinx myself but I've been re-taking driving lessons to pass the final test. My test is coming up soon, and the tension is mounting!

NOOR (GUMUS) is the turkish show ur talking about:

a) i HATE it with a passion

2) i really really do hate it

3) divorces have gone up since they started broadcasting on MBC by 40%, and from this 40%, 30% of the divorces took place because the wives thought the character Muhannad was the "perfect man" comparing to their current husbands - so "they deserve better".

I hate MBC. I hate NOOR. I hate Arab mentality, and i fuckin hate the supermarket they're building too. It's literally a 30 seconds walk.

I Am An Ailurophile

I love cats - I can't help it. I get squeaky and tweeny around cats, and don't get me started on kittens. I don't see how a person can fail to fall in love with those gorgeous little faces or the cute little purrs they make when you pet them. I've always said that I can't see what my future's going to hold, but that's not entirely true. I know for sure that in my future there will be cats. Lots and lots of cats. I will be a crazy cat lady, if it's the last thing I do.

Why I Love Russell Brand

I randomly stumbled upon Russell Brand's fabulous podcast on a day when I was very bored, and wanted to listen to something radio-like without having to turn on a radio (I don't own one). I didn't know anything about what was good in this area so I went through the top 10 comedy podcasts and lo and behold, there was good old Russ right up there at number 1.

To my untrained ears, the very first podcast I heard from him simply astonished me. What was this nincompoop (that's my second favorite word after Timbuktu) going on about the facial expressions (or lack thereof) in certain animals, with an equally silly buddy Matt?? As I listened on, though, I got drawn in by his blatant narcissism, dark humor, completely idiotic humor when he wasn't being dark, lurid sexual humor when he's not dark or idiotic, and oddly articulate dialogue.

Being someone who shuns awkward situations like the plague, and go as far as to hyperventilate in extremely awkward moments, the scenes he constructs are fascinating to me! Probably because he's the opposite of me: I go out of my way to avoid awkwardness, and he seems to go out of his way to create it. I tried to get my friends hooked on him as well, but they absolutely refuse to listen to him! I don't know why I always insist on dragging my friends into my obsessions, none of them have the same taste as me when it comes to humor and many many other things. In any case, the fact that he was so unattractive to the people around me made him incredibly hot to me.

The first time I actually googled him to visualize the man who was stealing my heart with his inane words, I suppose his appearance suits his radio personality: black from head to toe, hair sticking out in every direction, heavily accessorized, and tall. Behind the three-day old eyeliner and five-day old stubble, I could still discern gorgeous bone structure and handsome dark eyes. That was when I decided: he is my nouveau vague version of tall, dark and handsome! A guy who actually appreciates (and creates) great comedy and has actually opened books in his life. It doesn't hurt at all that I find him hot. Not at all.
When I get back to England, I plan on starting a collection of every movie and other media in which he made an appearance. He was in Penelope, St. Trinians, and of course Forgetting Sara Marshall.
All in all, he makes me laugh and makes me enjoy life slightly more. Listen to his show, watch his movies and buy his Booky Wook!

36 Songs That Are As Cool As I Am.

Yes, yes that's the title. Make of it what you will. It's not particularly a summer list or a top hits for 2008 or any other year (partly because the songs here span several decades). It's just a list of the songs I love right now. I highly suggest you go get these songs vite vite!! They will flavour your summer days fo shizzle. It doesn't really matter what genres you've pigeonholed yourself into listening to already, people should always listen to music that's diametrically opposed to what they think their taste is.

By the way, this started off as a top 10 list, and like everything else in my life, I sort of lost control and just didn't know when to stop. :)

1. The Girl from Ipanema - Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto

I don't know much about the artists, I don't even know which year this song came out, and I don't understand half of the song because most of it is in Portugese. Isn't that the great thing about good music? It dispels the need for communication by a mutual language. If any song can create a mood, it's this one. As soon as I hear the first bars playing, my eyelids start to droop and I get all drowsy - I don't know what this Stan character is saying, but I like what I hear.

2. The Blues are still Blue - Belle and Sebastian

This is one of those random genres: chamber pop? Never heard of such an obscure label. Whatever. It's kind of unusual but very familiar at the same time. It kind of sounds like a song that would be played in a broadway musical, but slightly off-key, which I think is what I like about it. The words are kind of innocent and honest - a rare thing these days.

3. Brothers - Ry Cooder

Remember when I said about keeping your mind open to tastes completely different to your own? This was what I meant for myself. It's something like an instrumental country blues song... and if anyone knows me, they know that would be something that I would have hated - except I love it. Go figure!

4. Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman

It's got soul.

5. Papa Was A Rolling Stone - The Temptations

I can't help listening to this song over and over again! Such a cliche, but such a classic. I keep a-hopin' and a-prayin' that I would be in some kind of incident when I and the people around me will spontaneously burst into song... and this would be the song we'd sing.

6. The Way We Get By - The Spoons

It's not a particularly exceptional song on its own, but it's more of a nostalgic remnant. It reminds me of the long drives to school in the morning, all grumpy and sleepy, and the long drives back with my friends, tired but happier... I miss my friends *sigh*.

7. Joy to the World - Creedence Clearwater Revival

When I need cheering up, these guys never fail to 'revive' me. Man, I am hu-larious.

8. Snow (Hey Oh) - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

You didn't think I'd have a favorite songs list without some Red Hot lovin'? Fools! If I had to pick just one of their songs right now, this one would be it.

9. Ne Me Quitte Pas - Jacques Brel

This is one song which could never be covered by anyone in the same way: all of the emotion comes from the tortured voice of the artist himself. I've never heard so much heart and soul poured into words before! That's not to say the lyrics are flimsy. They're pure poetry, in fact. He dedicates this song to a woman who he begs not to leave him.

"Moi, je t'offrirai, des perles de pluie venues de pays ou il ne pleut pas/ je creuserai la terre jusqu'apres ma mort pour couvrir ton corps d'or, et de lumiere/ je ferai un domaine ou l'amour sera roi, ou l'amour sera loi, et tu sera reine... Ne me quitte pas"

"Me, I'll give you pearls from countries where it doesn't rain/ I would mine the earth, 'til after I'm dead, to cover your body with gold, and light/I would make a land where love is king, where love is law, and you would be queen... Don't leave me"

Kill me now - curse you, Monsieur Brel, for creating expectations of the measly race of men that will never be fulfilled!!

10. Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something

An excellent song, and the one that best reminds of the happiest times of my childhood in Paris.

11. Cakewalk into Town - Taj Mahal

The only thing I'm sorry about is that I never heard this guy's music sooner in life. His sound is rough, old school, blues, and takes you right back to the old south, which is, I expect, the intended effect.

12. Pink - Aerosmith

You gotta have a bit of Aerosmith - and pink - in your life!

13. Anyone Else But You - Moldy Peaches

It's unconvential, inexplicable, simple, beautiful - exactly how I would define what love should be.

14. When it Comes - Tyler Hilton

This guy's got a fantastic voice, and he's kind of conventional and 'pop'-ish, but songs don't have to have shock factor and be totally out there to be enjoyed.

15. How to Save A Life - The Fray

The favorite of every medical drama on tv at the moment and probably for the foreseeable future. In fact, it's appeal isn't limited to medical dramas - I remember hearing it in One Tree Hill (predictably), and the Hills. But hey, it works! If my life were a drama series, this song would be playing in the background as I walk away in slow motion, looking back once (forlornly, of course) at whoever it is I'm sharing my angst-ridden drama with.

16. There it Go (The Whistle Song) - Juelz Santana

I can't for the life of me figure out how to pronounce this guy's first name - but it's the kind of r&b that's got a good beat, and the lyrics are not synonymous with "Bow-chicka-bow-wow". That's rare for r&b these days.

17. Alcoholic - Starsailor

I saw these guys this year when they came to play at the student union. I managed to elbow my way to the front row ("Oh, hey guys there's our friend *mumble*, over at the front, let's go say hi!"), and that was where we fell in love. He doesn't know it yet, but Lead Singer Guy will be mine one day.

18. Tracks of My Tears - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

One of those songs that I just can't explain - I just love.

19. Nah Neh Nah - Vaya Con Dios

Perfect to listen to before going out. I can't place the year this song was made, so I guess this would be what they call a 'timeless' song?

20. Tu Vuo Fa L'americano - Tonino Carotone

This song goes well with the previous one. I can pretty much picture myself roaming around the streets of .. Rome - on a vespa of course - looking for a good gelatto place to ward off the Italian summer sun.

21. J'ai demande a la lune - Indochine

Just listen to it. It's in French (obviously) but I don't think the lyrics matter much.

22. Naked as we Came - Iron and Wine

My favorite, absolute favorite, study song. For some reason the singer's soft voice really helped me deal with my short attention span issue.

23. Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer

The musical embodiment of all the rom-com chick flick lame ass blockbuster movies... that I love.

24. Yellow - Coldplay

This song just makes me smile, and think of a better place then where we are now in the world.

25. Girlfriend - Justin Timberlake feat Nelly

When I was a silly teenager still in high school (which I will officially no longer be in less than a week) this song was what I imagined a 'really really cool' boy would say to me if he 'really really, like, liked me liked me'. God - how was I ever that utterly vacuous?

26. Lifting the Veil from the Braille - The Dissociatives

Basically just an assortments of whistling and humming... and somehow it completely lifts my spirits every single time - and annoys the hell out of my friends here when I try to emulate them. Win/win you say? I agree.

27. Momma's Boy - Chromeo

What is this song? I still don't understand it - it's absolutely hilarious, though. You have to check out the youtube videos people put up of it, as well.

28. Dickes B - Seeed

German reggae dancehall. Talk about clashes of civilisation. This is a contrast that really works - at least for me. I love the video clip too - it's so german and so un-german at the same time! Dickes means fat in german, and B is supposed to stand for Berlin - according to my german friend who happens to be down with the german reggae scene (what are the odds, huh?). So I'm assuming that 'fat' here is meant to be the good kind: phat. The song is about representing the mean streets of Berlin. I like!

29. Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - The Animals

The music is odd, the drums are too loud, the words seemed to be squeezed into the beat, and I just get the general impression that there's too much going on, but it allll works. Talk about luck, huh.

30. Ironic - Alanis Morisette

You all should be understanding now that I'm a true '90s music fan. It's the decade I wish would repeat itself over and over for eternity. And Alanis Morisette is a personification of that decade. I heart that weird woman.

31. Stiff Upper Lip - AC/DC

For when I'm feeling rebellious - like right now - and want to annoy the annoying people downstairs who play seventeen different instruments at all hours of the night. All you need is one loud set of speakers and this song. Just add volume. Take that mofos!

32. This is why I'm Hot - Mims

The title says it all. When this plays, I can heard my

33. Angel of Sadness - A Camp

The former lead singer of the Cranberries isn't faring all too badly on her own. I like the folksy stuff, and she pulls it off.

34. Sixteen Tons - Tennessee Ernie Ford

No one seems to know this man exists, and no one I know seems to care for him much. Pooh! I laugh in the face of their derision.

35. Habibi Ya Noor il-Ain - Amro Diab

I have to have at least one arabic song here - and this would definitely be my all-time favorite feel good arabic song in my whole life.

36. Sittin on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding

This song slowly grew on me till I became slightly obsessed with it. It's sort of perfect.

Summer songs, you say? Taj Mahal: Ain't Nobody's Business
I just can't get enough of it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a more serious note, I picked up the latest issue of french Elle's weekly mag, because it had a little interview with Romain Gavras, the director of that disturbing/real video, but I stumbled on another quarter page article that was even more disturbing/real.

An Indonesian housemaid in Saudi Arabia, Nour Miyati, had been subjected to so much physical abuse by her employers that she required immediate medical attention and had to have several fingers and toes amputated. The employer's wife later admitted to regularly inflicting abuse on Miyati, and was found guilty by the tribunal court.

Unfortunately, the Riyadh general court judge in charge, in a second verdict, dropped all charges against the employer and his wife, and "Nour Miyati has found herself awarded, in compensation for her 'living martyrdom', a sum of 2500 Saudi Rials (roughly 330 GBP). Is this the price, in Saudi valuations, of the suffering of an immigrant domestic worker?" [rough translation]
Human Rights Watch has published an article with more of the details.

I think it comes as no surprise to people who know even an inkling about the Arab world that we have probably the worst overall human rights record in history. A lot of people will of course at this point think of many other abominations to the human race from other countries, and you will undoubtedly find one in every single country in the world, from Austrian husband to Romanian dictator to your pick of Bush presidents... the only difference is that the mentioned criminals have been highly publicised and are (now) part of an open government: you have at least a general idea of what's going on. We obviously don't know the inner workings of the governments and their societies, and I'm also positive that juicy stories get hushed up all the time there, but they can't beat the Arab lacquer art, featuring shiny glossy cars and happy people all the time.

The sad thing is, this isn't nearly the first time I've heard of stories like this. One of the maids and the driver working back home were previously employed in Kuwait. When the driver, 'Christian' arrived, he wasn't very talkative at all and kept mostly to himself. The housemaid was pretty much the same. When we got to know them a bit more, they started to open up to us, we discovered that their former employers (they worked in different houses) used to hit them regularly, as well as denying them food whenever they so wished. How exactly are you supposed to react to this? I felt like I should personally apologize to them - the level of incapacitation is so frustrating at that point you have to do absolutely anything to feel like you've done something. All we could really say was that we weren't a family that was in the habit of committing crimes against humanity, so if we couldn't change their past or alleviate the sting of it, at least we could ensure that they knew their present employment wouldn't go in the same direction.

I love my home and where I come from, but I certainly don't want to be one of those people who regurgitate propaganda. I know a lot of Arabs want to think they have it made, that they come from the best place in the world, and that their society is developing and getting better and better every day. Yakhi!! It's not true. Stop the delusions! I don't care about the smaller things at the moment like voting rights and the fact that political parties don't exist and the levels of education and the fact that we don't have enough roads and highways. All these things seem trivial in comparison to the fact that governments are allowing their citizens to be criminals, they ignore it, and in Arabic there's a saying: Silence is acceptance.

The real problem here is that the principle of open government clashes directly with an Arab's nature. If there are problems going on in a family home, they don't talk about it, life goes on as if it doesn't exist, and we certainly don't go to counselling because of it: talking to a stranger about our problems? Ha! This debilitating sense of prides translates itself into all areas, public and private. So when a human rights organization wants to come into our country and take a looksie, there's not a Hillary's chance in elections that they would allow them to see the truth.

A lot of these criminals are continuing their hidden abuse because they feel they're given the green light by their country: at home they're entitled to everything, even physical domination of their employees.
What can I say? It seems like such an obvious distinction between right and wrong that what I'll simply never fathom is why people who are mothers, fathers, 'respectable' members of community, aren't able to make it.

I'm not going to say that I'll wait for the day that people will stop abusing the innocent and vulnerable, because I suspect I'd have to wait a long time. All I'm saying is I'll be a very happy person when I find that my country and the ones around it are going to come to terms with the fact that Arabs aren't superior and that this kind of abuse should be seriously dealt with.
